12304: Managing with Purpose: Situating B Corps Within the Landscape of Purpose-Driven Organizations

With the growing recognition that business strategies should include social and environmental goals, different organizational forms have emerged to more successfully combine these multiple objectives. Purpose-driven organizations, social enterprises, and hybrid organizations are examples of this variety of for-purpose organizations. In recent years, B Corps have emerged as an important phenomenon and research context within this landscape. This Professional Development Workshop (PDW) will focus on the governance of for-purpose businesses, locating B Corps within this variety of organizational forms. This PDW will have two parts. The first part will consist of a discussion panel in which different panelists will cover different for-purpose organizational forms and how they relate to B Corps. The second part will be dedicated to roundtable discussions of working papers studying B Corps. This second part will require registration from participants submitting short papers (1,500-2,000 words). We have organized similar PDWs for the last three years with significant attendance. We anticipate that this PDW will be of interest to ONE members and scholars who study sustainable development, sustainability certification, corporate governance, social entrepreneurship, and workplace diversity. Members of STR and ENT should also find this topic interesting, especially those who explore organizational redesign for sustainability and social entrepreneurship.
