In this study, we analysed factors that lead households to participate in the co-production of a public good. Using the Value-Belief-Norm theory and based on questionnaire data, we found that perceived physical barriers and psychological factors jointly explain waste sorting. Also, perceived barriers moderate positively the relation between personal norms and waste sorting. This result has important policy implications for local governments in charge of organising the co-production of waste sorting as it allows to identify when it is most efficient to try to raise constituents’ personal norms (e.g., through education) or lower perceived barriers.
