To stay competitive in the face of artificial intelligence (AI), industry leaders must strategically orchestrate their resources and capabilities. Given the significant uncertainty and costs associated with AI, this study develops a model for how firms can effectively pioneer AI-driven solutions by orchestrating resources within and beyond organizational boundaries. Drawing on a qualitative longitudinal analysis of two global industry leaders, we uncover an iterative resource orchestration process comprising synchronizing, curating, and synergizing of resources. Notably, our findings highlight ‘resource curation’ as a critical mechanism to navigate the high costs and uncertainties of AI. Our findings contributes to the management literature by expanding the understanding of resource orchestration across firm boundaries and providing new insights into the strategic implications of AI.
