This paper develops a measure of leader self-complexity in a general work context. Based on theory and literature review, we identified three dimensions of leader self-complexity: the number of leadership roles, differentiation among leadership roles, and integration among leadership roles. Items were generated to measure each dimension. A pilot study was conducted with 15 industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology experts to test the content validity of the newly developed scale. In Study 1, we assessed the factor structure (EFA) and convergent validity with 321 UK leaders. In Study 2, we further assessed the factor structure (CFA), reliability, and validity with 330 US leaders. The results suggest that the newly developed 24-item leader self-complexity scale has sound psychometric properties and strong construct validity. It is a useful multidimensional measurement tool that can facilitate further empirical research in this field.
