The purpose of this PDW is to stimulate the next generation of leadership, followership, and identity scholarship and the application in leadership development practice. Seeing oneself as a leader or follower has been viewed as a core component of development, and identity theories are at the heart of understanding what it means to lead and to follow in modern work contexts. Yet, the conceptual and empirical body of knowledge in these areas remains dispersed across different strands of research, each of which focuses on some but not all elements of what it means to develop one’s leadership and followership identities, the critical challenges, and practical implications. Drawing on an identity-based development framework, recent collective attempts to foster the cross-fertilization of scientific knowledge and leadership development practice, and a successful AOM Caucus in 2024, this PDW seeks to (a) strengthen participants’ collective understanding of leadership, followership, and identity; (b) expose participants to the newest conceptual and methodological tools available for designing rigorous research; (c) catalyze new ideas and research collaborations among scholars across career stages; and (d) enhance the collective investment in rigorous research that informs the leadership development practice in organizations. The PDW has three parts: An introduction from the organizers, presentations of four distinguished speakers, and panelists’ introductions (part 1); thought-provoking small group discussions along the six main themes led by the panelists (part 2); and development roundtables, in which the panelists provide in-depth feedback on previously submitted working papers or facilitate new research ideas and collaborations (part 3).

This PDW is open to all AOM participants, and you do NOT need to register to take part. If you would like to make a working paper submission to receive feedback during the development roundtables (part 3), please follow these instructions: Email your working paper of no more than 2,000 words (excluding references, Tables/Figures) to Susanne Braun by Monday, June 23, 2025 (Email: susanne.braun@durham.ac.uk). You will be notified after the submission deadline if your working paper submission has been accepted for this PDW.
