Corporations are increasingly sourcing new products and business ideas from startups to complement their internal R&D efforts. This practice, labeled external corporate venturing (ECV), primarily encompasses startups’ acquisitions, corporate venture capital, and corporate accelerators/incubators. Recently, new ECV methods, e.g., Venture Client, have also emerged. ECV has become a pivotal strategy to access innovative technologies and to tap into the entrepreneurial ecosystem. On the one hand, established firms struggle to successfully implement ECV strategies. Corporations using ECV are facing the issue that there is not “one size fits all” approach. Thus, it remains elusive for practitioners to combine different ECV strategies into an effective portfolio. On the other hand, corporations not yet active in ECV face the daunting task of selecting the appropriate entry point into this dynamic startup ecosystem. And, very importantly, both experienced and novice ECV strategists face challenges in making decisions regarding strategy, governance, and organizational structure, which are crucial for the success of ECV. This PDW is structured as follows. In the first part, leading Strategic Management scholars share insights on their research on ECV, current trends and future possibilities. In the second part, participants engage in roundtable discussions facilitated by moderators to receive feedback on earlier submitted ongoing research. Moreover, the PDW aims to include at least one industry speaker as a panelist. As a result, this PDW equips attendees with the latest insights and future trends on ECV research, while also facilitating the creation of new academic and industry networks around this topic.
