It has been 20 years since van Dyck, Frese et al. (2005) first empirically demonstrated the relationship between an organization's error management culture and its performance. Since then, the field has matured and research on error management has proliferated. While we now understand many details better, new questions arise, often related to the complexity of today's work organization. The panel discussion will help shed light on the following questions: How do errors relate to individual and organizational learning? To what extent are error prevention and error management conflicting - or complementary - strategies? To what extent are top-down and bottom-up processes important in shaping an error (management) culture, and what can middle managers do? How does the errors-as-process perspective challenge our previous views on the concepts of error and error management? We will discuss these questions with a panel of five eminent scholars in the field of error management: Lauren Eskreis-Winkler, Michael Frese, David Hofmann, Eitan Naveh, and Zhike Lei. We hope that this panel symposium will guide error management research in the coming years and present relevant new developments for research and practice in the fields of Organizational Behavior, Organizational Development and Change, and Operations & Supply Chain Management.
