While there is an extensive literature on organizational identity, there is a surprisingly small amount of work focusing on the relationship between technology and organizational identity. Furthermore, the stream of literature that does exist has mostly focused on how organizational identity can pose a problem for firms when technologies are changing rapidly. We broaden the discussion of technology and organizational identity by studying the relation between organizational identity and technology which is large-scale and changes slowly. More specifically, we study the 2008 Large Hadron Collider breakdown at CERN to further theorize the relation between technology and organizational identity.
