Temporal perspective is crucial for us to understand organization science but has received less attention. Based on upper echelon theory, we focused on top management temporal perspective (i.e., considerations of future consequences, CFC) and investigated how it impacted new ventures’ high-performance work system (HPWS) implementation and firm resilience. Using a 5-year lagged survey dataset from 118 new ventures, we found that top management CFC is (a) a necessary and sufficient condition for HPWS implementation, and (b) a necessary but not sufficient condition for resilience. Additionally, we found that HPWS implementation is necessary but not sufficient for new venture resilience. Moreover, considering the contextual conditions, we found that HPWS is more beneficial to new ventures when industry growth is lower. Our study provides nuanced knowledge about temporal perspective, HPWS implementation, and new venture resilience in organization research.
