The term “integrity” is in virtually all codes of professional conduct, profiles of leadership, or statements of values and ethics. We assert that few, if any of those statements, take integrity seriously, for if they did, researchers, educators and practitioners would be investing significantly more time and resources into understanding and developing integrity. We explore the nature of integrity as “wholeness of character”, key processes in the development of integrity, and the implications for what it takes to develop and lead with integrity. Based on the theoretical insights we offer an agenda for future research and implications for practice.
