In this paper, we critically review career research, which is in urgent need of re-examination due to rapidly changing working and employment practices and in the context of complex global societal challenges. Considering these complexities, we develop and apply a critical dialectical review (CDR) method to focus specifically on tensions and contradictions in the literature and map out the multilayered complexity of career research in management and organisation studies. We explore how interrelated and overlapping tensions and contradictions interplay meta-theoretically and methodologically, conceptually, and empirically. This enables us to draw out key asymmetries and absences to propose a future careers research agenda that keeps tensions and contradictions creatively in play and facilitates dialogue across differences.
