Scholars have studied Venture Capital (VC) for almost four decades. Shedding light on the interdisciplinary nature of prior research, we herein review 195 articles published between 1985 and 2021 in entrepreneurship, management, sociology, and finance journals using a narrative synthesis approach. Major themes identified include the determinants of VC funding and investment performance, roles of VCs, investment strategies and geographic scope, syndication and other aspects of the VC-entrepreneur dyad (e.g., learning and relational, networking and reputational, and institutional aspects). We also develop an agenda for future research that includes interdisciplinary directions.
