This study seeks to investigate the effects about how CEO power influences internal and external corporate social responsibility (CSR). Using the data from Chinese listed firms spanning 2008-2022, our study indicates that companies led by more powerful CEOs tend to pursue external CSR initiatives while minimizing internal CSR efforts. Furthermore, the board independence adversely influences the link between CEO power and external CSR, and media coverage positively moderates the above relationship. However, the moderating effects of board independence and media coverage on powerful CEOs and internal CSR are not significant. Our findings enhance the existing knowledge regarding the antecedents of CSR by deconstructing different stakeholders and offers practical insights.
