Scholars of occupations and professions constitute a research community that encompasses a diverse variety of perspectives, research interests, and methodologies. Scholarship adopting an occupational lens can seek to contribute to better understanding occupations and professions themselves, longstanding organizational issues such as technology adoption or inequality, and contemporary phenomena in organizations, such as emerging technologies, increasing client power, scientific breakthroughs, or organizational wrongdoing. Given the diversity of past topics examined in this tradition, what are some productive avenues for contributing to occupations and professions research going forward? Through stories and insights from accomplished scholars, this PDW will shed new light on the diverse sources of inspiration for impactful empirical research. By addressing this question, this PDW seeks to help attendees develop a broader view of the sources of scholarly inspiration to help them move their projects in the field of professions and occupations forward. Now, in its sixth edition of a PDW on professions and occupations research at AOM, this workshop seeks to foster a community of scholars in this field.
