In recent years a significant body of research has developed to decentre the notion of leadership away from the “heroic” individual, where it has traditionally been located in the mainstream leadership literature. The collective turn theorizes leadership as a collective phenomenon, encompassing a variety of perspectives, ontologies and methodologies, in which leadership may be fluid, a property of a group or a whole community, distributed or shared, and constructed in interaction. This PDW explores current research into collective leadership seeking to connect diverse research interests and orientations. It forms part of an ongoing dialogue among scholars from around the world into the nature and significance of collective leadership in complex, contested and changing environments. We consider collective leadership from a broad range of theoretical perspectives and empirical contexts, focusing on controversies now coming into sharp relief as the body of theory develops apace, highlighting the distinctive challenges and opportunities that arise from conducting research in this field. In their opening statements panelists, who represent a broad coalition of scholars, will address a series of theoretically-informed controversies, arising from varying empirical contexts, methodological approaches, and ontological positions. During round table break-out sessions, panelists will lead discussions with participants to explore methodological, theoretical, empirical, and pedagogical challenges associated with studying collective leadership. In this way, the PDW is designed to enlighten, encourage, and energise participants who are researching or considering researching collective leadership.
