10624: Strategy and Innovation in the Biopharmaceutical and Healthcare Sectors

While the biopharma and healthcare sectors have received substantial attention from management scholars, the recent event of Covid-19 has highlighted the importance of these sectors in our every day lives. The purpose of this PDW is to foster and deepen scholarly conversations around important strategic themes of the biopharmaceutical and healthcare sectors that are of interest to a broad group of scholars at the academy, as well as practitioners and policymakers. Our goal is to discuss cutting-edge research ideas in these sectors and how scholars studying these questions can make meaningful theoretical and managerial contributions. We bring together a group of six leading scholars to discuss and engage with scholars studying cutting-edge research in the biopharmaceutical and healthcare sectors and help them navigate through the development of their research ideas and make meaningful theoretical and managerial contributions. Overall, the goal of this PDW is to provide a forum where scholars can develop a shared understanding of research on various topics in the biopharmaceutical and healthcare industries and provide important insights into how next-generation scholars may employ novel theories and methods to develop future research. We also hope to exchange knowledge on novel datasets in these sectors. This 2.5 hour PDW will follow a three-part format. In the first part, five leading scholars (Jillian Chown, Matthew Higgins, David Hsu, Lamar Pierce, and Lourdes Sosa) will share insights on important aspects of research in the biopharmaceutical sectors. The second part will consist of a semi-structured panel discussion among the presenters. The last part will contain a roundtable discussion focused on different topics and methods. We have secured commitments from our panelists (Jillian Chown, Matthew Higgins, David Hsu, Lamar Pierce, and Lourdes Sosa) and from an exciting set of junior scholars (Navid Asgari, Min Jung Kim, Victoria Zhang, Giacomo Marchesini) who will serve as mentors for the roundtable discussions. Prospective participants will apply to the PDW by submitting a brief description of a research idea to be explored with the discussants and other participants.
