24108: Value, Values & Valuing Data & Digital Technologies for Organizing an Uncertain World: A Provocation

This Professional Development Workshop (PDW) focuses on value in relation to data and digital technologies. Our existing understanding of value is founded in products and an economy centred around material artifacts. The intention of this PDW is to develop a research agenda which brings the question of value to the heart of CTO discussions of digital technologies. Specifically by: (1) Tackling some of the big questions enmeshed within any project of value, particularly those at the intersection of economic, social and environmental value; (2) Building a forum in which open-minded and distinctly interdisciplinary research partnerships can form and that go on to shape (or reveal) heterotopias of value(s) through digital technology and data across disciplines; (3) Exploring how we can better research value in digital contexts, particularly through the utilisation of computational methods (such as simulation and modelling) and drawing on management scholars' contributions to speculative theorising. This project seeks to help meet the intellectual challenges of anticipating, forecasting and shaping the uncertain futures of digital value, data value and technology’s value at a time of grave societal and environmental precarity. The PDW is structured around three provocative dialogues between original but established thinkers from CTO native disciplines, matched with a counterpart discussant from related disciplines. The dialogues will be followed by a series of curated discussions on the themes from these provocations. The speakers and discussants have been specially selected for their contributions to CTO research and their thoughtful reappraisals of hitherto dominant theoretical assumptions or empirical approaches. The PDW has been designed to encourage open- minded, innovative, ambitious and enduring research partnerships that draw heavily from the intellectual stewardship to date from CTO nascent theory and scholarship.
