The relationship between social movements and markets has grown increasingly complex, with collaborative activism emerging as a significant force for change. While traditional activism often relies on contentious tactics targeting firms (e.g., Bartley & Child, 2014), a growing trend shows corporations espousing support for sustainability and equal rights (McDonnell, King, & Soule, 2015). This convergence creates new opportunities for collaboration that remain “grossly undertheorized” (McDonnell, Odziemkowska, & Pontikes, 2021: 3). Opportunities range from cross-sector collaborations in global supply chains (Liu & Heugens, 2024) to embedded activists who span movement-partner boundaries (Schifeling & Soderstrom, 2022), and grassroots insider social change agents developing organizational capacity to address issues (Heucher, Alt, Soderstrom, Scully, & Glavas, 2024). These opportunities are particularly critical given current challenges: economic inequality driving anti-incumbent politics, intensifying climate disasters, and DEI backlash. Building on our previous focus on influence and impact, this year’s PDW examines how different forms of collaborative activism—from employee activism sustained through “dispersed collectivity” (Stöber & Girschik, 2024) to internal-external partnerships—can drive substantive change while navigating the tension between cooperation and cooptation (Leitzinger & Waeger, 2023). The workshop aims to advance theory around collaborative opportunity structures and mechanisms of influence, while fostering an inclusive scholarly community examining these emerging dynamics between movements and markets.

The "Movements and Markets" PDW consists of three segments: (1) an expert panel featuring six diverse speakers sharing insights on collaborative activism between movements and markets, followed by moderated Q&A (90 minutes); (2) a networking break for community building and informal discussion (20 minutes); and (3) themed research roundtables where participants can receive feedback on their work from senior scholars (70 minutes). Please note: Participation in the research roundtables (Segment 3) requires pre-submission of a 2-3 page research proposal addressing the intersection of movements and markets. Research proposals should be submitted to Junhyung Byun at JByun@iese.edu by Friday, July 11. Participants will be selected based on relevance and quality, with emphasis on including scholars at different career stages and institutions.
