Reviewing in leading journals is a critical gatekeeping process to ensure the rigor and quality of published studies and ultimately the impact scholars make in management. However, this process involves a fundamental trade-off between timeliness and the quality of reviews, directly impacting the publication process and faculty career advancement. Since editorial work relies on voluntary contributions, often unrecognized by university performance review protocols, fostering a feasible compromise between workload for editors and reviewers and the quality of published research is crucial. Participants in this PDW will engage in discussions and activities designed to address key issues and opportunities related to the review process. The workshop will explore the professional development potential associated with transitioning through roles in the review process—from ad hoc reviewer to Editorial Review Board (ERB) member, Associate or Department Editor (AE/DE), and eventually Editor-in-Chief (EIC). Additionally, we aim to foster inter-journal and cross-field sharing of best practices in reviewing to elevate collective standards. The PDW will also include a focused debate among the Journal of Supply Chain Management (JSCM) editorial board to assess and refine current review policies. Through this PDW, participants will gain insights into improving their reviewing practices while understanding how engaging in the review process can enhance their academic careers. This workshop aims to demystify and humanize the journey of scholarly reviewing, encouraging participation and excellence in this essential academic endeavor.
