20894: Testing the Impossible? Advanced Sensitivity Analyses for Management Research

To make causal claims with observational data, researchers must invoke identification assumptions (e.g., no omitted variables, exclusion of the instrumental variable, parallel trends). Though these assumptions can be defended through theory, subject-matter expertise, and statistical modeling, they are fundamentally unverifiable. Recent methodological advancements in sensitivity analyses, however, allow researchers to quantify the fragility of their results to potential violations of these assumptions. In this Professional Development Workshop, we introduce participants to sensitivity analyses tailored to various statistical models and research designs, including linear regression, difference-in-differences, instrumental variable estimation, and mediation analysis. By presenting these techniques, we hope to encourage management researchers to critically evaluate the credibility of their identification assumptions and transparently report how violations of these assumptions could alter their findings.

The final segment of this Professional Development Workshop will consist of parallel roundtables focused on software practice, where participants will gain hands-on experience with various sensitivity analysis techniques. To make the most of this portion, we recommend that attendees bring a laptop with Stata and/or R installed.
