Over the past two decades, scholars in different areas of organization and management studies have studied organizational space. Spatial research has contributed to that literature in various areas such as strategy, innovation, organization, institutions, and entrepreneurship. For example, scholars focusing on space have examined how space enables and/or hinders organizing and how organizing shapes space. This has been done by applying different conceptual and theoretical approaches and working with different research methodologies, such as qualitative, quantitative, and experimental methods. This PDW aims to bring together and explore the diversity of research in organizational space to synthesize insights, learn from each other, leverage synergies, and, generally, inspire future research on the role of space in organizing. It unites leading and emerging scholars in different areas to explore the role of space in key topics of organization and management research. This will include a discussion and comparison of topics (what is being studied in terms of space), spatial theories (which conceptual tools do researchers draw on in studying space, including a distinction between space and place), empirical sites, and methodologies (which methods do researchers draw on in studying space) in the different research streams. Participants will be inspired by systematically discussing and comparing how space is being studied in different research areas within organization and management studies and to promote diversity of understanding and the generation of cumulative knowledge across research areas. At the intersection of theory, methodology, and practice, this PDW offers a unique opportunity to deepen engagement with the evolving role of space in organization and management research.
