11306: Clarifying Deep Tech and Deep-Tech Ventures: From Conceptualization to a Research Agenda

Deep-tech ventures have emerged as a unique class of startups dedicated to advancing innovations from lab concepts to large-scale global impact. Despite their rising significance, there is no consensus among practitioners and scholars about what precisely constitutes deep tech, nor a clear definition of a deep-tech venture. The field is riddled with terms like “hard tech,” “tough tech,” “academic technology”, “science-based spinoffs,” and “high-tech ventures,” often used interchangeably, resulting in ambiguity over the distinguishing characteristics. From a scholarly standpoint, such underdeveloped ontological concepts are typical in the early stages of emerging phenomena—and problematic. In cumulative fields like management research, a lack of definitional clarity and shared language impedes progress, hindering the development of a cohesive knowledge base. This ambiguity complicates the comparability and integration of empirical findings across studies, underscoring an urgent need for a more structured approach to deep-tech research. Without a unified definitional framework, current discourse remains fragmented, stalling the advancement of deep-tech scholarship. Against this background, in this Professional Development Workshop (PDW), we will collaboratively work toward a shared conceptualization of deep tech and deep-tech ventures as epistemic objects respectively, aiming to establish a research agenda that clarifies and prioritizes critical research areas and respective research questions within this domain. For this, the PDW will feature an expert panel consisting of senior scholars in the field and will engage the audience in an interactive workshop format to jointly align our efforts.
