Systems thinking provides a complementary approach towards understanding the connections between interconnected parts and the wider systems within which they operate. This PDW aims to foster a conversation on how to embed a systems perspective in management and organization theories and research methods, while particularly seeking to support junior and early-career scholars in their academic journey. The purpose is to create a space to reflect upon and discuss fundamental questions, such as: How can systems perspectives shape our research questions? How to publish papers inspired by systems perspectives in management journals? And how to navigate the career trade-offs, tensions and opportunities, especially as junior scholars, in embracing systems perspectives? This interactive PDW draws on the expertise of an invited set of established and junior scholars familiar with systems thinking approaches to discuss the value of systems perspectives for developing novel and impactful research questions, and on how systems perspectives can shape methods for data collection and analysis. Further, there will be debate on its role during theorization as well as being an important research phenomenon. Finally, we invite leading journal editors to reflect on the future opportunities and potential traps for (ECR) authors seeking to contribute to management and organization theories and methods with a systems perspective.
