11441: Event Studies: Designs, Best Practices, and Applications

Event studies offer a powerful, data-driven approach to analyzing the financial impact of various real-world events. The method provides both theoretical insights and actionable guidance for practitioners. Its ability to generate pseudo-causal evidence, inherent flexibility, and relevance to global real-time challenges and opportunities make it a promising tool for researchers in the wider Academy of Management community, including operations and supply chain management, marketing, technology and innovation management, and strategic management. This PDW hosts esteemed scholars with extensive experience creating and publishing event studies in top-tier journals. It consists of two parts. In the first part, the PDW establishes the foundation of event study designs, basic principles, key decisions, and diverse application examples to provide a comprehensive understanding of the approach. The part also discusses how to use the method in teaching and thesis work. The second part will feature a panel discussion and an open Q&A session to dive deeper into pitfalls and best practices and share insights from an editorial perspective. The PDW encourages the discussion of ongoing work and aims to inspire new research. The workshop is designed for participants of all experience levels, whether they are interested initially, considering an event study, wanting to discuss ongoing research, or sharing hands-on experiences for collective learning. It is open to all divisions.
