Sports serve as 'living laboratories,' offering fresh settings to study management issues outside traditional industrial environments. Among the sports investigated, rowing has received special attention due to its versatility. Previous research has examined how rowing can provide novel insights into organizational puzzles, such as the cooperation-competition paradox, performance enablement, the plasticity of institutions, and organizational sensemaking. Similar sports, such as kayaking, which are less explored in management research, could also contribute valuable insights into group coordination, teamwork, leadership, and the mental stamina required for success. In business schools and associations, deans, scholars, and managers must navigate competitive and demanding environments. They are expected to work cohesively and excel collectively, much like high-performance athletes must operate to achieve success. Drawing parallels from kayaking, this Professional Development Workshop (PDW) is intended for members of the Organization and Management Theory (OMT) and the Ibero American Academy of Management (IAOM) Divisions of the Academy of Management (AOM). We plan to question and critically review organizational phenomena currently affecting the leaders of AOM. To enhance the quality of the discussions, strengthen personal relationships, and promote overall learning and development, we will engage in a private learn-to-kayak experience, followed by a debrief session to discuss relevant management topics inspired by this sport.
There will be an afternoon debriefing at CBS. As it is by invitation, those invited will be sent the full agenda for the day.
