Recent responses to global events (such as the pandemic), as well as a lack of progress on pressing global problems (such as climate change) have led many to sound the alarm about a so-called ‘crisis of expertise’ in our societies. At the heart of this crisis is said to be a declining desire to engage with and trust in traditional experts, including academics, scientists, and medical professionals. This panel symposium aims to explore the implications of this crisis for management scholars, and brings together four accomplished expertise thinkers to explore several critical questions. First, is there actually a crisis of expertise? If so, what has caused it, and if not, why do so many people think there is one? Second, what kind of research opportunities (and challenges) does this crisis create for management scholars? Finally, at a more personal level, what does any such crisis mean for management researchers as experts themselves? Should we be worried about the long-term viability and relevance of our work and careers? How might we ‘future-proof’ ourselves to remain relevant in the midst of changing attitudes towards and appetites for conventional expertise?
