Success of interdependent innovation ecosystems increasingly relies on collaboration between different organizations. Overcoming collaborative challenges, including negotiation, coordination, incentive alignment and day-to-day management, can determine the success (or failure) of such an ecosystem. Governance mechanisms that support collaboration therefore play a crucial role in addressing these challenges, and in motivating organizations to join and remain part of an ecosystem. Digital technologies have changed the way that organizations collaborate. Specifically, they may enable novel ways to govern collaboration. This Symposium will address how digital technologies support collaboration in complex innovation ecosystems. The speakers will provide insights drawing on their own research, as well as the latest work on management of complex innovation ecosystems. The Symposium will examine the strategic governance of innovative initiatives within organizational networks and ecosystems (speaker Aks Zaheer), and the role of both traditional and new governance mechanisms enabled by digital technologies (speaker Fabrice Lumineau). The panel will also tackle the unique challenges of implementing innovative initiatives in ecosystems with many interdependent players (speaker Ron Adner) and competitive tensions (speaker Michelle Rogan), paying special attention to digital platforms (speaker Michael G Jacobides).
