19068: Perspectives on Complex Adaptive Systems in Teams

Our traditional understanding of how teams work needs updating as modern organizations face rapid changes in technology, globalization, and social dynamics. This symposium brings together experts to explore how Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) theory can help us better understand and improve team performance in today's unpredictable work environments. CAS theory offers a fresh perspective on team dynamics by viewing teams as networks of people who continuously adapt and evolve in response to both internal and external factors. Unlike traditional approaches that see teams as predictable and easily controlled units, CAS theory acknowledges that team behavior often emerges in unexpected ways through the natural interactions of team members. Research has shown how this approach can illuminate various aspects of team life - from how team unity develops over time, to how leaders can adapt their strategies, to how teams make decisions together. Studies have revealed how informal relationships between team members shape information flow, how teams adjust to changing circumstances, and how individual actions contribute to collective knowledge and performance. Our panel of scholars will discuss both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of this approach.
