12195: Exploring the Role of Complementary Technologies in an Emerging Sector: The Case of New Space

The rapid growth of the space sector, driven by increasing involvement from private enterprises, has captured the attention of management scholars. A panel symposium at the AOM Conference in 2023, led by one of the co-organizers of this proposal, explored emerging modes of value creation within the 'new space' sector. Building on insights from this event, a subsequent panel at AOM 2024, co-organized by the other proposer of this symposium, discussed potential challenges management scholars may encounter when researching this field. Panelists emphasized the critical importance of exploring the role of complementarities among value creators in space. To expand on these views, we propose a panel symposium on the role of complementarities in the 'new space' sector and its potential to reshape or extend existing theoretical frameworks. Initiating rigorous academic discourse on this topic is both relevant and essential. While emerging theories in strategic management highlight the importance of complementary technologies, the 'new space' sector—with its unique characteristics and generative potential—may present novel opportunities for theorizing and empirical testing. To deepen our understanding and contribute new ideas, we have assembled a panel of expert scholars at the intersection of emerging industries and innovation strategies. Through presentations, moderated panel discussions, and audience engagement, this symposium seeks to highlight emerging research opportunities, discuss recent developments in the space economy, and facilitate community building around this topic.
