As scholars dedicated to addressing today’s pressing societal challenges, we contend that impactful research must transcend knowledge generation and actively contribute to societal change throughout the research process. This panel symposium explores how researchers can integrate impact as a central element of their methodology, challenging traditional epistemological assumptions of distance and neutrality. By adopting approaches such as co-creation, engaged scholarship, and scientific activism, this shift redefines impact as a process rather than merely an outcome, fostering change and relational engagement with practitioners. This discussion is especially urgent given the increasing complexity and scale of global crises, from climate change to social inequality. Conventional methods often fall short in addressing these interconnected challenges, necessitating innovative and collaborative approaches. To achieve truly impactful research, we must expand our methodological toolkit and incorporate unconventional empirical and epistemological approaches that allow us to engage deeply with the issues we study. Moving beyond the role of silent observers, researchers must actively engage with and support practitioners in addressing societal challenges. Our panel symposium brings together leading voices from diverse fields to explore how methodological choices, researcher motivations, and academic identities intersect in striving for societal impact. Panelists will share their experiences navigating unconventional methods, addressing challenges in access and collaboration, and balancing academic rigor with their role as change agents. This timely dialogue provides valuable guidance for navigating these complexities and aims to inspire an impact-driven approach that actively shapes a more equitable and sustainable future.
