This symposium examines the theoretical potential of the Circular Economy (CE) within management and organization studies. CE offers a sustainable alternative to economic organizing by minimizing waste, reusing resources, and regenerating materials and energy. Despite rapid growth in CE research, the concept remains under-theorized, with a proliferation of definitions and a divide between practical applications and theory-driven studies. This session seeks to foster dialogue to advance our theoretical understanding of CE and address these challenges. Panelists, including leading scholars and journal editors, will explore ways to bridge these gaps, positioning CE as a key topic for management journals. Discussions will address how CE has been theorized, its limitations, and opportunities for interdisciplinary integration. Practical guidance will be provided for developing CE research that meets the rigorous standards of top-tier journals while retaining its real-world relevance. The symposium seeks to establish a collective research agenda, advancing CE’s theoretical development and societal impact, and reinforcing its importance in addressing global sustainability challenges.
