Visibility has become a buzzword within DEI initiatives advocating for representation and attention to be awarded to underrepresented perspectives within and beyond academia. With extensive research addressing visibility, research has yet to acknowledge the ambivalence between marginalization and visibility faced by women and queer scientists in highly gendered fields. The research to be presented through the proposed poster will show the insights of a qualitative interview study and case study research with highly accomplished, visible scientists from these marginalized groups in academic STEMM and high-tech domains. Focusing on their individual understandings of and negotiations with visibility, their motivations as well as strategies and challenges in establishing effective communication, we aim to gather insights relevant for both theory and practice in (academic) diversity management thereby making a valuable contribution to this year’s AOM.
