Through semi-structured longitudinal interviews (N=37), we explore the process of professional identity loss experienced by nurses working the frontlines throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This external crisis provides rich opportunity to explore how nurses experience the loss of professional identity and its perceived impact on their wellbeing. Findings reveal a process characterized by distinct emotional phases evolving from an initial sense of invincibility to uncertainty, anger and feelings of emptiness. We highlight the dramatic and unexpected nature of the loss of professional identity and show how disruptive events lead to nurses’ professional identity loss through emotional upheaval, extending literature on crisis impacts and transitions. Management strategies to address identity challenges and support career resilience are also identified.
