This qualitative research explores the importance of the organization’s role in employee career transitions amidst the changing nature of jobs. Current career transitions research focuses on individual-level antecedents and outcomes of career transitions with the role of the organization primarily considered only for internal transitions, mass layoffs, and retirement. To reflect the modern work environment and employee expectations about career mobility, we broaden the focus of career transitions to include the organizations shifting views of employee career mobility, and the influence of this viewpoint on any work-to-work transition for any employee (e.g., not only high-potentials). Drawing insights from interviews with corporate alumni program managers, we highlight the need to shift from a traditional view of turnover as primarily detrimental to a more progressive mindset that embraces and facilitates employee mobility and career transitions. Our research provides practical recommendations for identifying a mobility mindset and enhancing safety for career mobility.
