Selecting and adapting existing measurement instruments presents significant challenges for organizational researchers. While comprehensive best practices exist for measurement instrument development and adaptation, understanding and applying them often exceeds researchers' available resources. To address this, we seek to develop a decision-making tool designed to guide researchers through the evaluation and adaptation of existing measurement instruments. This Excel-based tool will operationalize current best practices on measurement instrument development and adaptation across three key areas: construct conceptualization, operationalization, and validity assessment. Moreover, it will provide context-specific guidance on necessary steps for measurement instrument selection and adaptation. We will engage experts to evaluate the tool as well as assess its utility in navigating multiple competing measurement instruments. Through facilitating measurement instrument selection and adaptation we hope to reduce questionable measurement practices in business and management sciences more broadly. Through this tool, we also hope to facilitate structured discourse around evolving best practices in survey research.
